Analyzing a New Year Round School Calendar - 943 Words

Educational debates are a widespread in today’s society. Currently, one of the largest debates in education is the debate of whether schools should stay with the traditional school calendar or change to a year-round calendar. The main focus of the debate is centered around the idea that using the year-round calendar will provide kids with a more consistent learning schedule, which in turn creates better grades within the school and cuts back on summer learning loss. Year-round calendar and traditional calendar are far different. Traditional school calendar provides ten weeks of summer break and year-round calendar provides a shorter summer break but more frequent breaks throughout the year. Graff shares her concerns of the year-round school by saying â€Å"Parents are also concerned about the change’s effect on summer activities and child-care needs† (Archer). Then there are those like Frederick M. Hess in â€Å"Summer Vacation Is No Longer Necessary†, who is a resident scholar and director of education policy at AEI, mentions â€Å"It’s time to acknowledge that 19th-century school practices may be a poor fit for many of today’s families.† (Hess). Having frequent breaks at various times of the year means that a family who likes skiing could choose a schedule that has a break time during mid-January and use that time to vacation and ski without missing school while those in the traditional school would have to miss school in order to take a vacation during the middle of January. A big misunderstanding among most people is that a year-round school does not necessarily mean that children will literally be in school year-round.
